A new place to return your library materials...

Are you aware that the library has a brand-new, shiny outdoor book drop? We were able to purchase this drop with funds from the Andover Friends of the Library, as well as money donated to the library by the Marlborough Grange. We ask that you kindly DO NOT use the drop when the library is open, but otherwise, return all of your library materials to this outdoor drop, please. You'll find it located on the handicapped parking side of the building. Eventually, the old book drop in the building will be closed up, so please get used to returning all of your library materials to the new drop. Thanks!

Yup! It all happens on Monday evening, June 27th at 6PM, as we kick off our annual summer reading campaign. The challenge this summer is to "Carry Out A Good Book!" so what better way to do that than with FREE pizza at the library??? In addition, Rocky the Rock Cat (from the New Britain Rock Cats) will be here about 7PM for photos. Join us, won't you -- and bring the whole family!

Anne-Marie Forer and Cindy Killavey captivate audiences with stories, music, and movement. Anne-Marie might even play a variety of instruments, including fiddle, guitar, and banjo.

The Andover Friends of the Library will present a concert featuring Connecticut Bluegrass band, Grass Routes on Friday, August 27th @ 6:30PM. This show will be held at the Andover Gazebo (located on School Road in front of the Andover Elementary School and adjacent to the Andover Town Hall). Bring your blankets and chairs -- if it rains, the show will be held in the community room at town hall.

Grass Routes played a show at the gazebo last August for more than 100 folks. Won't you join them this year?

After reading The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer at our April discussion as part of the Hartford Region's BIG READ 2010, those who participated in our meeting thought it would be enjoyable to catch up with Huck Finn, as well. Friends' auction a big success...

Thanks to everyone who donated an item, baked a cookie or other goody, purchased a 50/50 ticket, a baked good, or some pizza, or successfully bid on an item at last Friday's Friends of the Library's annual fundraising auction. The totals have been added, and it looks like the Friends made a total of $2,750! At their annual meeting coming up on May 17th, the group will decide how to spend the money. We'll keep you posted on how that goes...

Talkin' 'bout Tom Sawyer -- Monday, April 19th...

2010 marks the 100th anniversary of Mark Twain's death, and so, The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer was chosen as the Hartford region's BIG READ pick for 2010. If you've not read any Twain since high school (or, perhaps, even since childhood), consider joining in our book discussion of the adventures of Tom, Huck, and Becky on Monday, April 19th @ 6:30PM. We'll provide the snacks -- you bring your own beverage.

Snapshot Day -- the results

As you probably know, Andover PL participated in Connecticut's Snapshot Day for libraries last month. The folks who organized all of this picture-taking and surveying of patrons (namely, the CT State Library, along with the CT Library Consortium and the CT Library Association) will soon be launching a website compiling a lot of the data and photos taken at various libraries. Smile! Snapshot Day is coming...

On Wednesday, February 17th, the Andover Public Library will be taking a 'snapshot' of our activities. From now 'til next Wednesday, we invite you to fill out a brief questionnaire each time you visit the library. There is a checklist of choices on each form, but also a space where you can leave some commentary, if you'd like. Libraries in other CT towns and communities will also be conducting their own "Snapshot" days in February. The purpose is to gather information which may be used to support CT libraries in the upcoming legislative session, and this project is a joint effort of the Connecticut Library Association, the Connecticut State Libary, and the Connecticut Library Consortium. Results and pictures gathered by the state's libraries will be posted online at http://snapshotctlib.wordpress.com after March 10th. Be sure to visit the library anytime, but especially on February 17th!

Be sure to join Santa & Mrs. Claus as they make their annual library visit this Saturday, December 12th. The Clauses will be here from noon to 2PM, but parents can bring the kids anytime during that timeframe. Mrs. Claus will read one of her favorite stories, 'Twas The Night Before Christmas, and there will be cookies for everyone. Stop by!

In addition to Santa & Mrs. Claus visiting on Saturday, we'll also welcome teacher and singer, Kenneth Quesnel, who will entertain those children waiting downstairs for their turn to visit with the Clauses. He will start singing about 11:45AM.

Please remember that once Santa & the Mrs. arrive, the library will be closed for "regular" library usage. If you're planning on bringing your kids, please be aware that you should enter the library through the downstairs door.

Coming soon...new library cards!

Beginning on September 8, 2009, we will begin issuing new library cards to new patrons of the Andover Public Library. These cards are plastic and include a card you can keep in your wallet, as well as a key tag card (similar to those you've probably received from various grocery store chains, CVS, etc., etc.) Our fabulous Friends of the Library group has purchased these cards which feature a very handsome image of the library taken by Andover resident (and Friends' member) Roger Maynard.

Plastic cards will be issued to new patrons who are residents of Andover, as well as to "old" patrons (that is, those patrons who already have the blue paper library cards) beginning September 8th.

Is summer finally here? It hasn’t really felt much like summer, but the calendar tells us it is! In the library, that means summer reading and summer reading programs have arrived. If you’re not sure what’s going on, here’s a little refresher:

Wednesday, July 22nd – 7PM : THE HISTORY OF JAZZ
Join CT musician, Vincent Cassotta, as he delivers an educational and entertaining concert for the whole family featuring all types of jazz, from Dixieland through modern jazz and jazz rock. Please note that this program will be held in the Andover Congregational Church’s air-conditioned sanctuary (across the street from the library).
Friday, August 14th – 6:30PM : GRASS ROUTES BLUEGRASS
Celebrate summer with a free concert from one of Connecticut’s premier Bluegrass bands, GrassRoutes (http://www.grassroutesbluegrass.com/). For nearly 30 years, this group has been performing all over New England, and has appeared on many radio and TV programs, and at concerts in coffee houses, festivals, and other venues. GrassRoutes performs a broad range of songs from traditional Bluegrass to more contemporary
folk and country material. Bring your chair, blanket, and lots of family and friends to this fine, free concert. Location: the Town Gazebo on School Road (in front of Andover Elementary School). In the event of rain, the show will be held in the new Community Room in the Town Hall.

In addition to these events, we have several reading programs (with incentives) for both children and adults. Our challenge for the family is the program known as ICE CREAM FOR BOOKS. Read this summer, and keep count of the number of pages you’ve read – 2,000 pages for kids up to age 14, and 4,000 pages for those older than 14. Read what you like, but books must be borrowed from the Andover Public Library. If you’re able to reach the goal, you’ll get a voucher for a free ice cream sundae at the GrassRoutes Bluegrass show on August 14th. When you visit the library, be sure to note the sizes of the two “cones” we’re building, as our challenge is to see who can make a bigger ice cream by reading this summer – the adults or the kids. Thanks to the Friends of the Library for sponsoring the Bluegrass show and the ice cream goodies that will be available.

Other reading incentives for kids include programs from the Connecticut Defenders, as well as Applebee’s.

Don’t forget that there are lots of museum passes available for you to borrow this summer from places as varied as the Basketball Hall of Fame, Mystic Aquarium, the Roger Williams Zoo, and the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. Passes may be borrowed and used to receive discounted or free admission to these and other area museums. A complete list of available museum passes is posted in the library. If you have any questions about borrowing procedures, please visit the library or call us at 742-7428.

On June 22nd, we hosted a very nice book discussion featuring Rhode Island author, Edward Hardy, and his second novel, Keeper And Kid. Twelve lively and enthusiastic patrons kept the discussion rolling, and it’s safe to say that a fine time was had by all. Our next book discussion will be held on Monday, July 27th, and will feature Bill Bryson’s recap of his travels along the Appalachian Trail in A Walk In The Woods. Copies of the book are available at the desk – please ask for one, and be sure to join us at 6:30PM on July 27th.

Don’t forget that the library is not open on Saturdays from July 1st through Labor Day. We’ll be open again on Saturdays beginning on September 12th.

The Andover Friends of the Library met last night, and voted to give the library a total of $6,767. This money was raised through the efforts of the Friends with their May 1st Goods & Services Auction, as well as other fundraising endeavors over the past year, and will be used for all sorts of great things for the library. Specifically, we'll use some of the money to buy or renew our many museum passes, produce more programming for kids as well as the whole family, and buy more books on CD and DVDs. Life for the library would be a lot more difficult without the Friends, so if you're not currently a member of the group, won't you consider joining?

We are participating in the Hartford Region's BIG READ 2009 campaign, though. Our book discussion of Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird will be held on Monday, February 23rd at 6:30PM.

The Senior Discussion Group will be discussing Keeper And Kid by Andrew Hardy on Monday, January 26th at 10:15AM. Cathy Campen is the discussion leader.

Andover Public Library welcomes two very special guests to the library on Saturday, December 13th -- Santa Claus & Mrs. Claus! Join them for their visit from noon to 2PM. Mrs. Claus will read her favorite story, the Clement Moore classic, "The Night Before Christmas," Santa will hear all of the special requests from all of the kids, and there will be cookies for all! All children are welcome, and this event is, of course, completely free of charge.

In case you haven't heard, the Friends of the Andover Public Library are holding their 5th annual Goods & Services Auction tomorrow night -- Friday, May 2nd -- in the cafeteria at the Andover Elementary School, School Road, Andover. Preview starts at 6PM, and the auction will begin at 6:30PM.

Each year, the Friends hold this auction, and the proceeds are then donated to the library to be used for such things as purchasing museum passes, DVDs, books on CD, programming, and other fabulous things that benefit the library (and therefore, our patrons). Won't you consider joining the Friends and supporting this huge event? In the Fall of 2007, the CT State Attorney General's office distributed funds to CT libraries in the settlement of a case brought by the AG against five of the largest compact disc distributors and three large retailers whose sales practices allegedly led to artificially high retail prices for music CDs. With the $700+ we received, the Andover PL has purchased 67 CDs with the funds we received, and they have been added to our collection. Enjoy!

Next book discussion for adults -- Monday, November 13th

For our next book discussion group for adults, we've chosen a novel that is fiction based on fact. Lucy, by Ellen Feldman, tells the love story of a young Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his wife, Eleanor's social secretary, Lucy Mercer. When Eleanor discovers love letters written between FDR and Lucy, divorce is discussed, but Franklin's honor and political ambitions will not allow for such a thing. Instead, he promises to never see Lucy again. Folks who know history, however, know that FDR's promise was not one he could keep.

We have multiple copies of this book available for your reading pleasure. Stop by the library and ask for a copy at the circulation desk.

What's in a name?

If you've visited the library within the last couple of months, you may have noticed something (or someone) new in our children's area: a great big primate! Sadly, our new friend has been without an official name since he came to the library (although some of the staff refer to him as "Joe").

Anyhow, to help out the big ape -- after all, we don't want "Joe" to have identity issues, do we? -- all library patrons ages 14 and under are invited to submit a name suggestion. Names can be submitted in person at the library OR through email to andoverctpubliclibrary@yahoo.com. The person submitting the name must have a valid Andover Public Library card. A name will be chosen from all entries submitted to the library by Friday, October 27th. A panel of judges will review all of the submissions, and the person who has suggested the best name will win a copy of the new DVD, "Curious George."

Put your thinking caps on, and let us know a good name for a big monkey!

We've added one more museum pass to our list of those you can borrow for free or reduced admission. This time, it's the New England Carousel Museum in Bristol. For a complete list of our museum passes, click here.

This summer, our museum passes (most of them donated to us by the Andover PL Friends) were borrowed and used by our patrons many, many times. In fact, patrons used these passes more in the 3 summer months than the total number of times they've borrowed our museum passes in the last 2 years! Wouldn't a visit to one of these museums be nice on one of the beautiful fall weekends?

If you're interested in borrowing any of these passes, you must have a valid library card and no outstanding fines. If you have any questions, please let us know.

A sure sign that fall is on the way -- the Friends are selling Entertainment Books for 2007! Here's a note about the sale from Friends' President, Dianne Grenier:

A word from the Friends' President re: Entertainment Books...

Here's a note from Friends' President, Dianne Grenier:

Dear Friends of the Library,

Just a friendly “tip” for those of you who purchased the “2006 Entertainment Coupon Book” that the Friends were selling last fall/winter.

In the Coupon book are coupons for such things as $5.00 off your bill if you spend $50 or more at a ‘this or that’ grocery store. Some of these stores are not very local or may not be grocery stores you frequent …BUT ... Stop and Shop will honor all coupons from their competitors.
I’ve used coupons for IGA’s in East Hampton or from Lunt’s which is out of business. This will make that coupon book a whole lot more valuable.

For those of you who didn’t purchase a book last year, the Friends will be selling them again this fall. Watch for them at the Library or our advertisement in the Rivereast.

Coupons in the 2006 Entertainment Book are good until November 2006. There’s still lots of time to save.

Yet another museum pass...

Adult Book Discussion - Monday, September 18th

In case you haven't heard, Connecticut author Mary-Ann Tirone Smith's memoir, Girls of Tender Age, has been chosen as the book to read in this summer's East of the River Reads! program. This is a community-wide program that encourages residents in the region to read the same book, and then, in the fall, those readers will get together to discuss the book with its author. In addition to Andover, other towns participating in the program include Bolton, Columbia, Glastonbury, Hebron, Manchester, Marlborough, and Portland. Mary-Ann Tirone Smith will be speaking about her memoir on Wednesday, October 4th at the Douglas Library in Hebron. That discussion will begin at 7PM. Members of our Andover PL reading group will be taking a "field trip" to this event at the Douglas Library.

At Andover PL, though, we're trying something a little bit different. In addition to reading Smith's memoir (of which, the library has several copies), we will also be reading her 1994 novel about the Hartford Circus Fire that happened in 1944: Masters Of Illusion. We have borrowed several copies of that book, as well, for our reading group.

We would like participants to read both books for our book discussion to be held at Andover PL on Monday, September 18th at 6:30PM. Please ask for copies of these books at the library circulation desk. They are ready and waiting for you.

The Friends of the Andover Library officials are organizing an “exclusive” backstage tour of the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts in Hartford for members of the Friends of the Library.

The tour will take you backstage of both the old Mortensen Hall and the new Belding Auditorium.
See the Projection Booth, Green Room, Electrician Room with the “stars signature wall” and the Horace Bushnell Suite. Learn about the historic one-of-a-kind ceiling mural, the Dale Chihuly “Ode to Joy” and much more.

Your Tour Guide will be Dianne Grenier, president of the Friends group and a 10 year veteran of the volunteer corps of Bushnell ushers and tour guides.

A considerable amount of walking is required and the tour will take approximately 1½ - 2 hours.

There is no charge for the tour, but participation is limited so reservations are required.
The Friends of the Library are delighted to be able to offer this opportunity to its members.

The Friends' Bushnell tour date is set for Saturday, August 26 at 2:00pm.

Friends' BJs promotion due date extended to August 1st...

The recent promotion sponsored by the Andover PL Friends group in which you can renew or sign up for a new membership at BJs Wholesale Club will continue through August 1st. This offer allows you to save $10 on your membership fee for BJs (pay $35 vs. $45 for a "regular" renewal or new membership), as well as extends your membership by 3 months (15 months vs. 12 months). Another benefit: the Friends will receive $5 from BJs for each application that is submitted. If you'd like to help the Friends (as well as yourself) with this deal, stop by the library before August 1st and fill out an application.

Lots of museum passes -- yours to borrow!

As you may know, the Andover PL Friends group has purchased some museum passes for our library patrons to use this year. These passes entitle the bearer to free or reduced admission to some area museums, and be borrowed by any Andover PL patron who has a library card in good standing with no outstanding fines. If you're looking for a place to take the family on one of the muggy, rainy, or even sunny summer days, why not check out one of these passes?

Here's what the Friends have purchased for you:

The Children's Museum (formerly known as the Science Center of Connecticut) - West Hartford -- Pass allows for one free admission for every paid admission, adults or children. [Regular admission prices: $7 Adults & Children over the age of 12].
Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism -- Free admission for 2 adults & 2 children to four Connecticut state museums, including Henry Whitfield State Museum in Guilford; the Old New-Gate Prison & Copper Mine in East Granby; the Sloane-Stanley Museum in Kent; and the Prudence Crandall Museum in Canterbury.
Harriet Beecher Stowe Center - Hartford -- Pass admits 2 people for a free tour of the Stowe House OR a seasonally-offered Garden Tour or Nook Farm Walking Tour. [Regular admission prices: $8 Adults (ages 13-64); $7 Seniors (age 65+); $4 Children (ages 5-12)].
Mark Twain House - Hartford -- Admits one adult OR 2 children free with the purchase of one adult admission. [Regular admission prices: $13 Adults (ages 17-64); $11 Seniors (age 65+); $8 Children (ages 6-16); Free admission for children under 6].
Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center - Mashantucket -- Pass is valid for $5 off admission for up to 2 adults & 2 children. [Regular admission prices: $15 Adults (ages 16-54); $13 Seniors (age 55+); $13 Children (ages 6-15)].
New Britain Museum of American Art - New Britain -- Free admission for 4 people (no age restrictions). [Regular admission prices: $9 Adults; $8 Seniors; $7 Students; Free admission for children under 12].
Peabody Museum of Natural History -- Yale University, New Haven -- Pass is valid for $5 off up to 4 admissions (no age restrictions - one adult must accompany children under age 16). Admission applies to Museum galleries only. Special exhibits, events, and programs may require a fee. Pass is not valid in February. [Regular admission prices: $7 Adults; $6 Seniors (age 65+); $5 Children (ages 3-18)].
Roger Williams Park Zoo - Providence -- Reduced admission for any combination of 4 Adults, Seniors, and/or Children. During January-June & September-December, the discounted rate is $6 Adults; $4 Seniors; $3 Children. During July & August, the discounted rate is $9 Adults; $6 Seniors; $5 Children. [Regular admission prices: $12 Adults; $8 Seniors (age 62+); $6 Children (ages 3-12)].

In addition, the library offers these passes, which are provided free to the library by their respective organizations:

Mystic Aquarium Institute for Exploration - Mystic -- Reduced admission for 2 Adults & 2 Children. From September 5th through June 30th, the discounted rate is $13.50 per Adult & $9.50 per Child. From July 1st through September 4th, the discounted rate is $15.75 per Adult & $11.25 per Child. Please note: this is the first year the Aquarium is offering any discount on their summer rates. [Regular admission prices: $17.50 Adults; $16.50 Seniors (age 65+); $12.50 Children (ages 3-17)].
New England Carousel Museum - Bristol -- Free admission for 4 people (no age restrictions). [Regular admission prices: $5 Adults; $2.50 Children (ages 4-14); Children under age 4 are admitted free.]
Wadsworth Atheneum - Hartford -- Free general admission to the museum for 2 Adults & 2 Children (ages 6-17). [Regular admission prices: $10 Adults; $8 Seniors (age 62+); $5 Students (ages 13 through college students with ID); Free admission for children 12 & under].

We encourage you to borrow these passes frequently this year. They may be checked out the day before your planned visit, and must be returned one day after your museum visit. Follow-up note from Ms. C. about the "last" Storytime...

We had a great time at the end of Storyhour party. We had wonderful baked treats and some juice along with a few stories. All the kids are reading with a friend or parent and working on filling their Reading Charts with stickers. Stop by the clerk's desk to get the stickers updated and let Ms. C know when your chart is full. She'll give you a dip into the backpack of goodies!

Last Wednesday Storytime until September 12th...

Here's a note from our Children's Program Director, Cathy Campen:

I just thought it was important to let the Storytime kids know we'll be ending our program this Wednesday, June 21st. To celebrate, we'll be having a little "party," so do come if you can. We will begin the Storytime program again in September when the kids go back to school. Our first Wednesday back will be September 12th at the usual time -- stories begin at 10:30AM, followed by a session of show & tell, as well as a craft on most weeks.

Be sure to stop by the library this summer, as we've got lots of great programs for kids of all ages! See our brochure distributed to all the AES kids, or pick up a copy at the circulation desk.

Library hours on July 3rd...

It looks like the library will be open only from 10AM-1PM on Monday, July 3rd. If you plan to stock up on videos or books for that holiday "weekend," please do so in those three hours.

Also, please note that the library will be assuming it's "summer schedule" beginning July 1st. In short, that means that there will be no Saturday hours until after Labor Day.

Are you a BJs member?

Whether you are or are not currently a member, BJs Wholesale Club has an offer that might appeal to you. Best of all, our Andover PL Friends group will receive $5 for each person who joins or renews their BJs membership before July 3rd. Here's how it looks like things will work:

Stop by the library before July 3rd and fill out a special BJs application for a new membership or renewal. Instead of paying the regular Annual Membership Fee of $45, you'll pay $35, plus you'll have 3 additional months added on to your membership. For example, my current BJs membership will expire in August, but if I renew it through the this promotion, I'll save $10 off the membership PLUS my membership will now be active until November 2007. Best of all, BJs will give the Friends $5 for every new or renewal membership we can recruit by July 3rd, and eventually, whatever money the Friends raise from this venture will be donated back to the library for programs or materials or something good for our patrons. How can you go wrong?

Membership applications are available at the library circulation desk. Please ask, and help us out if you can!

Some DVD gifts from our Friends...

As you may or may not know, the Andover Friends of the Library have been very generous to the library, especially over the past couple of years. A recent gift from them allowed us to add several new DVDs to our expanding collection. It seems that patrons still borrow quite a few VHS tapes from the library, but, more and more, they are interested in borrowing DVDs. The titles we've purchased with money from the Friends are mostly not brand new releases, but they are certainly new to the library, and are sure to please borrowers of all ages. Here's a list:

Summer reading programs for kids

This week, Andover Elementary students will -- or should -- be bringing home a brochure announcing our library summer programs! We have programs as varied as beading to magic to archery, so there's something for pretty much everyone. Our Children's Programming Director, Cathy Campen, has worked hard on organizing these programs, so we hope for a big turnout. In addition to programs this summer, your kids will have the opportunity to earn prizes by reading at least 10 books this summer. In addition to our popular "passport" program, we will have trips to the "treasure chest" for readers, as well as special prizes from Applebee's and the Connecticut Defenders Baseball Club (formerly, the Norwich Navigators). There will even be a special Library Night at Dodd Stadium in Norwich on August 15th, complete with postgame fireworks! For more information on the Defenders, go to their website.
